World Ocean Day is an international celebration and collaboration for a healthier future for our Ocean. On June 8, 2020 people from across the globe will unite to raise awareness of the critical role the ocean plays for all life on Earth and the dire need to protect it.
This year, being unable to host their annual World Ocean Day Family Festival, Seacoast Science Center (SSC) planned a full WEEK of virtual programs and events, video features, and live-streams to connect people to the wonders of the ocean, raise awareness of the challenges facing it today, and offer ways we can all help conserve this life-sustaining resource.
The World Ocean Day Weeklong Virtual Celebration, held June 1-8, will take place on the Seacoast Science Center’s website and Facebook and Instagram pages, as well as via Zoom and Kahoot applications.
The week kicks off with a new edition of Your Learning Connection, a resource SSC launched shortly after temporarily closing its doors due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Your Learning Connection is packed with lessons, activities, and resources to support at-home learning, empower children to investigate nature, and help families find respite from today’s challenges. This week, families can learn about sharks and get a close-up view of the Center’s chain catsharks, learn how to make upcycled art projects, find a backyard ocean-shapes scavenger hunt, and learn about how all rivers lead to the sea in a watersheds lesson.
Families with preschool children can enjoy fun activity prompts with Ocean Commotion on Monday and Big Fish Little Fish on Friday at 9am, the same time the programs typically meet weekly at the Center. A live Q&A session with Marine Mammal Rescue team experts will go live on Instgram on Tuesday and SSC Marine Biology Fellowship students will feature their research projects during the Wavemakers series offered throughout the week.
Environmental partners Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation, Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Programs, Gundalow Company, New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance, and League of Conservation Voters will also be offering presentations throughout the week.
On Saturday, June 6 at 6pm, you can take part in Virtual Tide Pooling session on Instagram Live to learn about the fascinating plants and animals that live along the rocky shore of Odiorne Point State Park. Preregistration is requested.
The weeklong event culminates on World Ocean Day, June 8th, at 6pm with a Family Ocean Trivia Challenge, sponsored by Green Maids. Family teams must register in advance to will vie for prizes and bragging rights during this fun and educational game.
