Crafting the modern short story takes a bit of magic and luck, and a lot of sweat and sometimes tears. But a number of specific principles can be applied to help create a story: from moment-by-moment descriptions, engaging the senses, close attention to voice and word choice, to ending the opposite way you begin. Knowing and following these principles will help in a successful execution of the short story. No actual dogs will be harmed in this lecture/discussion based course.
