Conspiracy of Spirit: An Ekphrastic Poetry & Art Show at Art Up Front Street, Exeter, NH
March 19 – April 6
Closing reception / Reading: Sunday, April 6, 2025 / 2-5 PM
“… Dear Beloved, it’s a conspiracy of spirit: —
it can’t be done alone …” —from The Black Outside by Joy Priest
A poem based on a picture or work of art is called an ekphrasis. This exhibit coinciding with the Exeter LitFest features 14 New England poets writing in response to 14 local artists’ paintings, prints, drawings, industrial quilt squares, and collages.
In all of the works, we hope you’ll notice the conversation between the artists’ visual, tactile, olfactory, auditory images and the poets’ inner responses. During the exhibit, students are invited to come in and write poems of their own based on the Art. We will have a drawing for one youth to read with us at the reading & reception.
