The Noble and the Base: The Hierarchy of Metals in Early America at Strawbery Banke

The Piscataqua Decorative Arts Society hosts Gerald Ward on the topic of 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮, focusingon precious metals such as silver and gold, and everyday base metals such as iron, pewter and brass. Their characteristics, qualities, uses, and the essential roles they played in the 17th & 18th centuries will be examined. This presentation is in honor of Joyce Volk, longtime Portsmouth resident and one of the founders of the Society who was a collector of metalwork.
Lecture from 5:30-6:30 pm at the Strawbery Banke Visitor’s Center, Hancock St. Portsmouth, NH. Refreshments served at 5:00 pm.
