Portsmouth city staff will host a meeting on road improvements for pedestrians in the Dondero School neighborhood on Tuesday, April 7 at 7 p.m. at the school, located at 32 Van Buren Ave. Improvements to Van Buren Avenue and the intersection of McKinley Road were identified in the city’s Safe Routes to School plan in 2010 and in a recently completed bicycle and pedestrian plan. The city plans to add new striping to mark road shoulders and crosswalks and update signage in the neighborhood.
Juliet Walker, the city’s transportation planner, says the improvements “will help slow traffic speeds down and clearly signal to drivers that this is a pedestrian area, particularly during school opening and closing.”
