The Substance was formed in 1980 in York Beach, Maine, when Vermonters Chris Elliott, Greg Elliott and George Mason formed a band with York locals Dave Whittle and Paul Chadwick. The band stayed together as a writing, recording, touring entity until 1984, when the Elliott brothers went to San Francisco. Greg Elliott returned in 1988 and reformed the band without its former leader. Big brother Chris has returned since then and lead guitarist George Mason and drummer Dave Whittle have rusticated. Artie Meyer now plays drums and rather than replace the lead guitar, all of the critical lead guitar parts have been absorbed by Chris Elliott’s instrument, the trumpet. The result is a band unlike any other; mostly off-kilter original material in the first place now reoriented around the trumpet, along with odd covers and instrumentals. The band gets together for rehearsals once a week and the show is tight, entertaining and to be found nowhere else on the seacoast or this planet.
