Carl Dimow – flute/bass flute – is an eclectic and creative musician who performs in many genres – from klezmer music and Brazilian choro, to jazz, classical music and Middle Eastern music. He brings his wide knowledge of music and exceptional flute technique to his creative jazz improvising. He is one of the few flutists to bring the beautiful sound of the bass flute into the jazz world. Carl’s also an award winning composer, whose Klezmer Suite for Flute and Classical Guitar has been performed on five continents. His performances have been hailed as “mesmerizing”, “brilliant” and “sublime”.
This quartet is rooted in classic jazz, but also features some of Carl’s original compositions – all while exploring the beautiful possibilities of the flute and bass flute as lead instruments in jazz.
Carl is joined by:
David Newsam – guitar – David Newsam is a remarkably versatile guitarist whose playing is equally inspired by jazz guitar greats Wes Montgomery and Jim Hall – and Latin American virtuosos such as Laurindo Almeida and Luis Bonfa. David has performed with many legendary jazz greats, including Jim Hall, Bucky Pizzarelli, and Peter Bernstein, Clark Terry and others. David is an assistant professor at Berkeley College, where he has taught jazz and classical guitar since 1989.
John Hunter – bass – Well known to Seacoast jazz fans, John is an exceptional bassist who can maintain a swinging groove – and play a beautifully melodic solo. He has performed with many icons of jazz including Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, Slide Hampton and Sheila Jordan, to name just a few.
Gary Gemmiti – percussion – A long time mainstay of The Press Room, Gary is a versatile, joyful and creative drummer who is deeply rooted in the great jazz drumming tradition. He can be seen playing everything from jazz to reggae and rock music. Most recently, Gary has been collaborating with the great jazz pianist, Jamie Saft.
