Christopher Volpe Art Lecture: Ten Steps to Working in Series – and Why You Might Want To!
Thursday, October 2nd at 6:30pm
The Kittery Art Association Gallery

Working in series – creating a group of thematically unified paintings – can be a tremendous opportunity to develop a body of work that shows self-awareness, seriousness, and commitment to your craft. In addition to practical benefits, such as approaching galleries and demonstrating artistic development, working in series allows you to challenge and expand your own creative limits, assumptions, and explore who you are as a creative individual. The deeper you go, the more exciting the possibilities and the more individualized and recognizably yours your work becomes.

Following a slide show of inspiring examples, we’ll get everyone started on their own path with a practical exercise designed to identity a potential series to experiment with on your own.

Originally from Long Island, Christopher Volpe is an artist, writer, and teacher working and living in New Hampshire. His paintings in tar and gold leaf reference mortality, mysticism, and concern for the fate of a world buying and spending its way toward uninhabitability. His work is collected internationally and held in the permanent collections of Smith College and the Whistler House Museum. Grants and awards include the Saint Botolph Club Foundation, MassMoCA/Assets for Artists, and the NH State Council on the Arts Artist Advancement Grant. With degrees from the University of New Hampshire and Stony Brook University, he has taught painting, literature, mythology, and the history of art at various colleges and universities. He writes regularly about art and artists online and off.
