Also on View: Works by Spotlight Artist Susan Goodby

A childhood fascination with color and design, which was not at all nurtured by a career in business, led Susan to seek art classes after her early retirement. She and her husband had moved to Vermont where she rekindled her interest, taking art classes from local artists and a nearby college. For six years they also traveled to Italy so Susan could take an art class, and she was once lucky enough to have a seminar with one of her favorite artists, Wolf Kahn, known for his exuberant use of color. His work had a significant effect on her thinking about painting.

Susan was very active with a number of galleries throughout northern Vermont, also exhibiting in juried shows. A seminar in creativity sparked a strong interest in mixed media and soon she had developed her own technique for detailed portraits, still life, and landscape, winning a number of mixed media awards in addition to others in oil and acrylic painting. She both took and taught some mixed media classes. Color was always a major focus.

After vacationing in Maine for many years, Susan and her husband relocated to Kittery in 2015. She has been a member of KAA for ten years and served two terms on the board. She also is a member of the New Hampshire Artist Association and Exeter Fine Crafts. The Seacoast landscape provides renewed inspiration. A particular favorite is the coastal marshes with meandering waterways, tall grasses, and reflective water. But whatever she is painting, whether from life or from her imagination, Susan tries bring out the natural beauty of the scene with a nuanced expression of color.
