“I guess you could say I’ve been a painter my whole life, I just didn’t know it. I attended an engineering college and studied science, not art. My desire to be creative has always existed, so I paint with a purposeful urgency by expressing the colors and textures I noticed growing up, spending my free time outdoors in Maine. I engineer my work by applying math and proportions to my canvases, and eagerly mix colors, much as a scientist might mix solutions in the lab. I cannot separate the scientist and artist that I am. Detail oriented, I notice colors and shadows – the dappled sunlight on the trunks of pines, and the blues and purples in the snow shadows. The color palette and patterns inform and inspire my work and I continue to be surprised with the vibrancy and effects I can create by mixing colors and juxtaposing them on a canvas. I strive to record mother nature’s artwork in my own way. Because I am self-taught, I have no educational constraints and paint with a freedom of expression and a curiosity for the colors I mix. When I look out the window during any season, I am always thinking about which colors to mix on my own palette to best capture what I see. I am driven by a freedom to express light and color and I eagerly await the outcome for every new canvas that I unwrap.” — Holly Lombardo, October 2025
