Executive Council meets in Dover

A group of local business people, elected officials, and others want to establish a ferry service between Portsmouth and Provincetown, Mass. The group, called Promote Our Port, will host a public meeting about the possible service on Friday, Aug. 21 at 9 a.m. at city hall. The meeting is an open discussion about ideas for the service.

City councilor Jim Splaine is one of the officials who’d like to see the ferry service established. He and members of Promote Our Port went to Provincetown on June 10 to talk with officials there about a ferry connection between the two cities.

“There are lots of opportunities for great events,” Splaine said. A ferry service connecting the two communities during the tourist season could “enhance both communities economically in the coming years,” he added.

According to Splaine, a similar plan was in the works in the early 2000s, but the ferry that would have been used was sold and the deal fell apart. Splaine said adding ferry service to the port, located on Market Street, would add to the port’s uses and benefit the city’s hotels, restaurants, and arts and culture groups. — LC
