A Tribute to Royal Ladies of Blues & Soul at Jimmy’s

Jimmy’s Jazz & Blues Club
135 Congress St
Portsmouth, NH 03801 United States

A celebration of the music of female Blues & Soul royalty, including songs by of hit songs by KokoTaylor, Aretha Franklin, Ruth Brown, Etta James, Big Mama Thornton, Gladys Knight and more!

Big Mama Thornton growled “Hound Dog” before Elvis ever heard it. Koko Taylor shook the walls of every juke joint on the South Side. Ruth Brown sold so many records she bankrolled an entire label. Aretha Franklin demanded respect and got it — from the whole world. Irma Thomas, Etta James, Gladys Knight — these women didn’t just sing the blues and soul; they built it, brick by brick, breath by breath. On a single unforgettable night at Jimmy’s Jazz & Blues, five of the Northeast’s most formidable blues artists step into that legacy and set it on fire.

Leading the charge is Toni Lynn Washington, Boston’s crowned Queen of Soul and Blues, whose career stretches back more than sixty years and whose voice — at 88 years old — still commands a room like few performers alive today. She’s joined by Diane Blue, the powerhouse vocalist and harmonica player who made history as the first woman to join Ronnie Earl & the Broadcasters and earned a 2020 Blues Music Award nomination in the process. Christine Ohlman (a/k/a “The Beehive Queen for her towering platinum hairdo) is the longtime current vocalist with NBC’s Saturday Night Live Band.  Deeply embedded in the scenes of New Orleans, Muscle Shoals and Nashville, when she opens her mouth to sing, the truth comes out. Gina Coleman, the Berkshire County force behind Misty Blues and a 2019 International Blues Challenge finalist, has spent decades channeling the very women this night celebrates — Big Mama Thornton and Koko Taylor run through her music like a river.  And Laura Chavez — the guitarist who in 2023 became the first and only woman ever to win the Blues Music Award for Instrumentalist of the Year — brings a fretboard ferocity that has to be witnessed in person to be believed.

This is a night where the legacy of these royal ladies comes alive through artists who carry it in their bones. Along with a stellar backing band who play this music with all the respect it deserves. (Dave Limina on Hammond organ, Brad Hallen on bass, John Medeiros on drums).
