Sunny War (Sydney Ward) returns with Armageddon in a Summer Dress, a haunting, genre-blurring record inspired by a strange period living alone in her late father’s century-old Chattanooga home—where gas-leak hallucinations of ghosts sparked songs about memory, loss, and the many versions of ourselves we leave behind. Following the breakthrough of Anarchist Gospel and tours with artists like Bonnie Raitt and Mitski, War poured herself into obsessive home demos—playing nearly every instrument—to build a bigger, more electric sound that expands her signature fusion of folk, punk, blues, and roots music. The result is a fearless, deeply personal album that summons collaborators ranging from anarcho-punk legend Steve Ignorant to Valerie June, while continuing War’s lifelong mission to blur genre boundaries and channel music’s outsider spirit into songs that are both darkly reflective and defiantly life-affirming.
