With summer-like conditions emerging this week, we’ve got a range of indoor and outdoor activities coming up for the weekend, featuring music, food, art, storytelling, farm festivities, and more. Check out a handful of the highlights below.
Fire and Ice
Vernon Family Farm in Newfields kicks off its monthly Fire and Ice series on Friday, May 19, from 4-7 p.m. There will be food, music from Jake Davis & The Whiskey Stones, fire performances, hayrides, chick viewing, pig feeding, and more. The series continues on the third Friday of each month through September. Proceeds go toward an improved chicken tractor for the farm. Gurf Morlix
Singer-songwriter Gurf Morlix’s resume dates back to the 1970s. He’s performed with Lucinda Williams and produced two of her albums. He’s also served as a producer for Seacoast native Slaid Cleaves. He appears in Ethan Hawke’s forthcoming film “Blaze,” about his late friend Blaze Foley. Morlix plays a CD release show for his new album, “The Soul and The Heal,” at Red & Shorty’s in Dover on Friday, May 19, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $30, available here.
Word weekend

The Word Barn in Exeter is waiting to find out if the town will grant it a special exception to continue operating in a residential area. In the meantime, the arts venue is hosting two events this weekend. On Friday at 8 p.m., regional singer-songwriters Dan Blakeslee and Will Kindler take the stage ($10). On Saturday at 7 p.m., Long Story Short presents stories on the theme of “sibling rivalries” ($5). For tickets to either event, click here.
Exeter Arts & Music Fest
TEAM (Town Exeter Arts Music) presents the first ever Exeter Arts & Music Fest at Swasey Parkway on Saturday, May 20, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The music lineup features local bands Cold Engines, Gretchen & The Pickpockets, Rockspring, and others. There will also be artist vendors, a local food court, interactive kids’ activities, and an “eco-village” hosted by the Green Alliance. Chases opening exhibit

The gallery at Chases Garage in York, Maine, opens for its fifth season on Saturday, May 20, with an opening reception for “Big Pots, Little Cups” from 4 to 8 p.m. The exhibition, which will remain on display through July 8, features large- and small-scale functional pottery by regional artists and Chases instructors Adrian King, Brian Buckland, Christopher Cooper, and Tyler Gulden.
