A guest lecture at the Portsmouth Music and Arts Center (PMAC) will explore the origins of country music, jazz, hillbilly, blues, ragtime, pop ballads, rock ’n’ roll, and more. “The Music You Never Heard: Jazz and Other Things,” featuring music historian Allen Lowe, takes place Tuesday, June 2.

The event will include some unusual recordings, most of which span the first 30 years of the 20th century, a period when numerous genres sprang from African-American sources. Lowe will discuss the recordings, what they mean, and how they sound.

Lowe is a historian, writer, saxophonist, composer, recording artist, and audiophile. His lecture is free and open to the public.

The event begins at 7 p.m. on June 2 at PMAC, 973 Islington St., Portsmouth.
