More than 60 regional artists are featured in “On the Map,” the first juried exhibition at 3S Artspace’s gallery in Portsmouth.

Juror Christopher French, an artist and art critic from Long Island, didn’t look for a theme to unite the work, opting for a real variety of quality pieces instead. In his statement, French acknowledged a “strong improvisational, individualist approach” among the artists selected. Many different styles and techniques are represented, making it a survey of contemporary art in New England.
Andrea Zampitella (below) received the juror’s award for her video installation, “Fine China” (at right). Through three camera angles, she documents piling heavy weights onto a delicate bowl, a balancing act that calls into question ideas of feminine and masculine, strong and weak, possible and impossible.
“On the Map” opened with a well-attended reception on Aug. 5 and remains on view through Sept. 3. Check out more scenes from the opening reception below.
