The Seacoast Artist Association is featuring John Benford’s “New England” photography series this month. An artist reception is planned for Saturday, March 7, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the gallery in Exeter.

Benford is a commercial and fine art photographer based in Portsmouth. He specializes in on-location portraits and landscapes. His interest started at the age of 6 with nature and travel photography, while visiting national parks with his family.

A sense of place remains central to Benford’s photography. “I hope to reveal the story of the places themselves…” he says, in a press release. “When I photograph a person, I photograph them in their context, because place tells the story of who someone is.”

For the series, “New England,” Benford returned to the origins of his photography, but this time, the images are closer to home. Many are from the Seacoast, but the White Mountains, Acadia, and Cape Cod are also represented.

Seacoast Artist Association is at 225 Water St., Exeter, and online at seacoastartist.org. — Chloe Kanner
