Traffic lane closed as investigation continues

A woman died in a single-car crash into a utility pole in Rochester on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Rochester Police Department, the crash occurred at about 1:22 p.m. in the area of 306 North Main St. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2007 Hyundai Elantra was heading south on North Main Street when it veered off the southbound shoulder and struck an Eversource pole.

The driver, 70-year-old Henry T. Rapson of Rochester, was taken to Frisbie Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, police said. An adult woman who was a passenger in the car was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are withholding her name until family members are notified.

The Strafford County Regional Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. As of 4:20 p.m., one of the two southbound lanes on North Main Street remained closed to traffic due to the ongoing investigation.
