Drink and Draw starts up at 3S

Art

A new event, currently scheduled for the last Tuesday of every month, invites all creative types to Drink and Draw at Block Six, the restaurant and bar at 3S Artspace in Portsmouth. The first one takes place on May 26, from roughly 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

According to Dylan Haigh, one of the event organizers from Haigh and Martino, everyone is invited to join in. “Everyone doodled when they were kids, right? We’re going for that fun association with drawing,” he said.

Drink and Draw is a free, casual meet-up for the creative community. There will be a loose structure to start, but Haigh said there might be themed events in the future, such as figure drawing from models, if there’s interest in that. He also said there’s no pressure to share, but that he’s hoping to put together an online gallery.

Do people draw better or worse when they’re drinking?

“Probably technically worse, but sometimes creatively better. Less inhibited,” Haigh said.

There’s also the unrelated but similar Drink ‘N’ Draw organization based in Newburyport, Mass., which recently hosted an event at Book & Bar in Portsmouth and has plans for more in the area. The Port Tavern is its regular venue, and the next one is on Thursday, May 21, between 7 and 10 p.m. Models sit for  10-minute poses, although participants are free to draw anything.
