The 19-piece Compaq Big Band returns to the campus of the University of New Hampshire for the UNH Hepcats’ ‘Swing Dance Spooktacular’ Saturday October 26th. This terrific dance is FREE to UNH students, and just $10 for everyone else – free refreshments for all!
There’s a beginner lesson from 7:00pm-8:00pm, and the band plays 8:00pm-10:30pm. The venue is the Strafford Room in the Memorial Union Building (MUB) located at 83 Main Street in Durham. Dancers of all abilities are welcome, and the public is encouraged to attend. It’s always a great mix of singles, couples, and groups!
Wowing the crowd on vocals will be Alexandra Grace, channeling Ella Fitzgerald, Diane Schuur, Joanie Somers, Natalie Cole, and others, plus swingin’ instrumentals.
The Compaq Big Band is one the longest continuously operating big bands in New England, thrilling regional audiences since 1975. They have an exciting repertoire based in the roots of Swing’s Golden Age, but building on that with powerful, high-energy vocal and instrumental arrangements from the biggest names in recent and contemporary big bands. They keep up a busy year-round schedule of concerts, club performances, nonprofit organization fundraisers, jazz festivals, private/corporate events, and swing dances. Their two highly acclaimed albums, “Bandwidth” and “Hard Drive,” are played on New England jazz radio stations, BBC2 in the United Kingdom, and jazz public radio programs in Sweden.
