In April 2021, Tricia Donohue, local business person and gardener, first shared her vision for a community garden. Fast forward 13 months later after support from the City of Portsmouth, donors large and small, community and corporate volunteers, and a passionate Board of Directors, phase 1 of the Portsmouth Community Garden is ready. The Board of Directors is delighted with the community involvement, both volunteer and fundraising, for phase 1 of the garden. Thank you to all who have donated and volunteered! Phase 2 includes expansion of the garden to 100 beds, a shed, rain barrels, picnic tables, benches and more. For now, we will focus on phase 1, finish the remaining work in the next few weeks and enjoy the garden!
The 30 available beds (phase 1), available to rent for the season, “sold out” in a matter of days indicating a great need for a community garden. Community members interested in reserving a future plot can sign up for the wait list at portsmouthgarden.org website. Select beds are reserved to grow food for Gather and other organizations battling food insecurity in the community. Individuals wanting a bed, space permitting, will not be turned away due to inability to pay.
