SUMMARY:"More Than Words" at the Kittery Art Association
DESCRIPTION:More Than Words\nThe Kittery Art Association\n2 Walker Street\, Kittery\, ME 03904\nOctober 23rd through November 16th\, 2025 Gallery Hours: Thursday through Sunday: 11am-5pm \nIn More Than Words artists delve into the powerful connections between visual art\, communication\, and storytelling. Art is in itself a visual language capable of transcending meaning and evoking deep emotion. From broadsides to works inspired by literature\, ballads and song — there is a poetry in the creative process and the viewer is challenged to explore the impact of words on thought and perception. On view at The Kittery Art Association From October 23rd through November 16th\, 2025. \nOpening Reception: Sunday\, October 26th from 5-7pm Free and open to the public \nAlso On View: Works by Spotlight Artists Karen Camlin + Pat Sevigny-Higgins \nKaren Camlin: I work in a variety of mediums\, pure and mixed; and in a variety of forms. I often combine those mediums and forms in processes that best convey my intent and the work’s meaning. \nMy work incorporates figurative subjects in a fantastic or surrealistic manner and can incorporate elements of illustration and graphic design. When I work in a more purely abstract manner\, a style known as Lyrical Abstraction aligns most closely to my intent. \nMy work has been included in group shows such as those with The Seacoast Moderns\, as a member of Kittery Art Association\, in exhibits of artwork by seacoast area art teachers\, Maine State art educators\, in faculty exhibits at Wells-Ogunquit CSD and MSAD 35\, in the public libraries of York\, Kennebunk\, and Portsmouth\, NH\, and in a one-artist exhibit of works at the University of New England in January of 2024. I often sign work as “K. Harvey Camlin” – a signature which refers to those names used over time in my personal life and professional work. \nPat Sevigny-Higgins: I approached the work in this show with a quandary of how the written and unspoken word could be expressed in my work. I pondered the myriad of\nways to use the word and or many words to become part of the work. I used the written word both metaphorically and literally. The two styles that I normally work in as an artist are the vehicles for this body of work. \nI used my love for “shell\, rocks\, sticks” with some added media. I used the placement and numbering of the objects to say what I wanted without using the actual words. I used my mixed media abstract style and the actual word and abstraction of letters embedded\, written and layered in the work. This coupled with transfers\, written passages\, and homemade papers were a continuation of a series I am and will continue to work on for the foreseeable future. This mixed media style begins with the word “AMEN” and from that point I used that word and many to abstract. \n\n\n\n\nBoth styles evoke a different meaning and or feeling from me\, but they both begin with the WORD.
