The Art Center Presents – An International Alternative Photography Exhibit
The Art Center in Dover NH presents the Artwork of over 12 Artists, from all over the world, in a photography exhibit which features alternative photographic printmaking techniques. Today, where photography usually consists prints from digital cameras, chemical processes might seem a lost art. Words like cyanotype, tin-type, mordencage, and gum bichromate seem as arcane and archaic as so many forms of alchemy. Bromoil, albumen, and gumoil might sound like something to be more likely found at a pharmacy than an art exhibit. But each of these, and many others are actually types of photographic processes that can be seen at The Art Center in the latest exhibit Alternative Perspective.
Photographic processes, old and new, are utilized by photographic artists to remarkable effect, producing images that digital processes can only imitate. There is a chemistry – literally and figuratively – that takes place in a photographer’s darkroom or laboratory, that brings about something both visceral and tangible; something much more magical than can be achieved with a digital camera and computer software.
The public is invited to an opening reception, coinciding with Dover’s June Art Walk, on Friday, June 7, from 6 to 8 PM. The exhibit runs through July 6.
