The 3rd annual GatherFest concert to end hunger will be held on the grounds of beautiful Cisco Brewers Portsmouth, formerly Redhook Ale Brewery, on Sunday, Sept. 15 from noon to 6 p.m., featuring The Mallett Brothers Band, Martin England and The Reconstructed, The Kenny Brothers Band and The Suitcase Junket on the main stage, with local rising stars Abrielle Schaarf and Sam Robbins on The Beer Garden Stage. This event is presented at the close of summer each year as a special fundraiser for Gather, which serves those in the region experiencing hunger by providing nutritious food through focused delivery distribution and education programs and a food pantry market.
Because music festivals foster face-to-face connections and community engagement, they can be a natural fit for a cause to generate more interest and find potential supporters, says Gather Executive Director Deb Anthony.
“We hope this festival will help us reach out to people who may not know about Gather and our mission to end hunger in the Seacoast,” she explains. “We are grateful and excited to have the bands, Cisco, and all our sponsors joining in to support the cause and create a day that celebrates music, food, fun and community.”
Local food trucks on hand will include the Blue Mermaid, Dos Amigos, Wrap Shack, and Kona Ice of the Seacoast. Cisco beers will be on tap and some signature cocktails will be served.
The family-friendly event will feature a Kids Zone with a petting farm and pony rides from Carriage Shack Farm, a bouncy house and craft area.
Event sponsors help ensure that ticket proceeds go toward feeding the needy. They include Cisco Brewers, Kennebunk Savings, Little Harbour Charitable Foundation, Harvard Pilgrim HealthCare, Wellsense Health Plan, Liberty Mutual, Greenman-Pedersen, Inc., Prime Bucholtz, Westerley LLC, Market Square Architects, Bright & Lyon and Boldwerks Creative.
“Community is everything in this wild day-in-age,” says Chris Hislop, who works with Boldwerks and Bright & Lyon. “In a world full of uncertainty and division, one of the sure things we can find comfort in is gathering and celebrating the good in our community. Together we can feed our fellow neighbors, extend a hand, and lead by example in a quest to take care of each other and spread a missive steeped in love, respect, and understanding. And while we’re at it, we might as well saturate all the feel good vibes with an exemplary soundtrack.”
Headlining the show will be Maine’s Mallett Brothers Band, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. The band has a style that ranges from alt-country to Americana, jam and roots rock. It’s a musical melting pot that’s influenced equally by the singer/songwriter tradition as by harder rock, classic country and psychedelic sounds.
For 200 years, Gather has been serving Seacoast residents facing hunger. The agency was founded in 1816 by a small group of women committed to feeding the families of fishermen. Today, Gather works to end local hunger by offering nutrition education, collaborating with community partners to address the root causes of hunger throughout the Seacoast, and by operating its pantry market. Communities served include Greenland, Hampton, Hampton Falls, Kittery, ME., New Castle, Newington, North Hampton, Portsmouth, Rochester, Rye, Seabrook and Stratham.
Gather’s focus on streamlined internal systems, processes and controls ensures that every dollar donated has a big impact on hunger. 90¢ of every dollar donated goes directly toward local hunger relief.
Advance tickets are $20 for adults, $5 for kids ages 5-18. Children age 4 and under get in free. Day-of tickets are $25.
