From August 2 through September 1, Nahcotta presents Reclamation, their second solo exhibition of Emma Ashby’s newest body of work. The opening reception is Friday, August 2, from 5-7 PM.
Consistently, Ashby’s encaustic paintings inspire an emotional and visceral response, as if the viewer recognizes these places and yet they’ve never been there, precisely. Her ability to so romantically and resplendently convey untarnished, untouched nature in all of its raw beauty and colors is influenced by not only her talents as an accomplished artist but as a true lover of nature. Hence the title of this exhibition, Reclamation, originating from the Latin word, “reclamare,” meaning “to cry out against.” Ashby’s newest encaustics are about capturing the beauty around us, but primarily galvanized by a “passion to keep, protect, and care for what we have been entrusted, before we lose it.”
With an MA in Textile/Fiber Arts from The Royal College of Art, London and a BA in Fashion Design from the Ravensbourne College Art & Design, London, Ashby has been showing her work throughout the Northeast for nearly a decade and has regularly taken part in Nahcotta’s Enormous Tiny Art shows.
