BioBlitz at the Seacoast Science Center

BioBlitz is a day-long citizen science event where families can discover the amazing biodiversity of Odiorne Point State Park while helping field experts collect data on species found.

This event offers exciting opportunities for all ages to gain knowledge and skill in their favorite area of nature. Exploration teams will be birding, searching for insects, snakes and amphibians, exploring the freshwater pond and salt marsh, tracking mammals, identifying plants and seaweeds, tide pooling and more. You can sign up to participate in all or part of the day.

BioBlitz is a great way to excite children about science and a rare opportunity to meet many passionate biologists working together. Odiorne’s 135 acres and seven distinctly different habitats make it a unique and fascinating place to explore and learn.

If you are not up to scouring the park, there is still plenty to explore in the Center’s Gregg Interactive Learning Studio. There, you will see samples of species collected by naturalists and learn about the identification process. You can see amazing images of the plants, animals and activities from past years on large-screen monitors, observe insects through microscopes, see samples of seaweeds and fungi, and connect with many spirited nature-lovers.

The total number of species identified since our first BioBlitz in 2003 tops 2,300 and continues to grow every year. This valuable catalogue serves as a snapshot of biodiversity of our region. Your participation will not only help us monitor biodiversity, it will also help us provide countless educational opportunities for school children, families and groups.

In 2018, 350 participants identified over 500 species, 21 of which were new to our list.

BioBlitz registration is $10 per person or $30 per family (up to 6 people). Seacoast Science Center members can participate at no cost but pre-registration is encouraged. Please note: online registration closes Friday, September 20 at 12:00pm. Admission to Odiorne Point State Park will apply for those who do not register for BioBlitz in advance.
