From June 1st through July 1st,  Nahcotta exhibits AUDIO/VISUAL , a 28-person group show. The opening reception is free and open to the public and will take place at Nahcotta on Friday, June 1st,  from 6-8 p.m.

Music directly affects our nervous system, has the power to alleviate depression, stress, and anxiety, can magically decrease the confusion and delirium of elderly medical patients following surgery, and galvanizes the listener into perceiving others as happy or sad based upon the happiness and sadness conveyed by a song. It’s no surprise there’s a specific research niche devoted to music’s influence upon the human nervous system. And neuromusicology proves repeatedly that the human brain is ignited again and again by the music pouring into our ears.

For this exhibition, Nahcotta reached out to a number of artists with this call in directing the artwork solicited for AUDIO/VISUAL : “. . . we’ve had an increasing number of conversations centered around music – what we listen to when we drive, run, eat dinner, and most importantly when we create. A song can bring back a particular memory or change your mood. An album can make you nostalgic for a person you loved, a particular time in your life, or place you lived. For this show, we invite you to reimagine the cover of one of your favorite, or most meaningful, albums.”

The opening reception for this show is Friday, June 1st, from 6-8 p.m. at Nahcotta, located at 110 Congress Street in downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
