Birdseye Lounge to close doors

Owners hope the space will remain a music venue

Birdseye Lounge, a 200-plus capacity music and entertainment venue in downtown Portsmouth, will close in early September, the venue announced Monday.

In a message posted on its Facebook page on Aug. 29, Birdseye announced that it would close its doors following a performance by Mayer Kirby Mayer on Sept. 8. The venue, located at 41 Vaughan Mall, opened last year.

It has been a short run but we’ve had some great fun, the Facebook post reads. As you can all imagine, this is not an easy decision but one that we have made given a number of considerations.

Michael Behrmann and Lee Consavage opened Birdseye in 2015 with the goal of expanding the Seacoast’s live entertainment offerings. Equipped with a full bar, a stage, and a green room for performers, the venue has been hosting concerts, stand-up comics, trivia nights, and more. The owners hope the 3,000-square-foot space will remain a music venue.

We are currently looking for interested parties to come into the space to continue to operate it as a music venue to help make sure Portsmouth continues to have a broad and diverse artist community, the Facebook post says. We are hopeful we will find the right party to carry this mission on.

There are still several events remaining at Birdseye before the venue closes. In the Facebook post, Birdseye encouraged people to attend the remaining shows, and to support other music and entertainment venues in the Portsmouth area.

Our goal has always been to help bring more music and culture to our great city, the post says. Moving forward we must continue to support all those venues and artists who bring such incredible performances to our community, or else these spaces and these artists will go away. Let’s not let that happen!
