Fly by Night

A new fright-filled storytelling series launches tonight (Jan. 27) with the Mistress of the Mysterious, Roxie Zwicker. Presented by Deadwick’s Ethereal Emporium, “Fly by Night: Fireside New England Folklore with Roxie Zwicker” takes place at Pickwick’s Parlor of the Paranormal in Portsmouth. Zwicker, proprietress of New England Curiosities, will share creepy tales of the region, while local musician Mortimer Crow plays murder ballads. The event starts at 7:30 p.m.; tickets are $20. Driving Miss Daisy opens tonight at The Rep.

Odell Curetan and Katie Miller star in the Seacoast Repertory Theatre’s production of “Driving Miss Daisy,” which opens in Portsmouth tonight (Jan. 27) and runs through Feb. 19. Alfred Uhry’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play tells the story of a working relationship that becomes a 25-year friendship. Danielle Howard directs. Another new show opening this weekend is “The Maids,” which runs from Jan. 27 through Feb. 12 at The Players’ Ring in Portsmouth. Local favorites Whitney Smith and Constance Witman star in Jean Genet’s play, in which two sisters employed as domestic workers plan to murder their mistress. Gary Locke directs. Showtimes are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m.; tickets are $15. For tickets and more information, click here.

We Choose Peace Concert

In these times of turmoil, local performers are promoting a message of peace. The “We Choose Peace Concert” takes place at South Church in Portsmouth on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 7:30 p.m., featuring Joyce Andersen, Joanne Connolly, Ray DeMarco & Friends, the Sunday Assembly Band, and the Leftist Marching Band. Bill Mollison’s work is the subject of The Global Gardener.

Bill Mollison, who traveled the globe to spread the word about permaculture, died in September 2016. To celebrate his life, Seacoast NH Permaculture will host a screening of the documentary film series “The Global Gardener,” about Mollison’s approach to sustainable agriculture. A potluck dinner follows the screening. The event takes place Sunday, Jan. 29, from 5-8 p.m. at the Waysmeet Center in Durham. Donations will be accepted at the door. For details, click here.
