“Great Expectations” at NHTP

New Hampshire Theatre Project’s production of the Charles Dickens classic “Great Expectations” opens tonight (Friday, Nov. 18) and runs through Dec. 4. Meghann Beauchamp directs Gale Childs Daly’s stage adaptation of the novel in NHTP’s trademark ensemble chamber theater style. Bretton Reis stars as Pip, while five other actors play a combined total of about 40 characters and narrators. Show times are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. at 959 Islington St. in Portsmouth. Tickets are $28 for general admission, or $24 for students and seniors. Seacoast Tellabration
Seacoast Storytellers present Tellabration at The Stone Church on Saturday.
Tellabration is an international celebration of storytelling. The Seacoast Storytellers will present the local installment of the event at The Stone Church in Newmarket on Saturday, Nov. 19, from 7-9 p.m. A group of local storytellers will share their tales, including Shelley Hersey, Papa Joe Gaudet, Debra Ballou, Shawn Middleton, Anne Jennison, Roxie Zwicker, and Michael Lang. The event is intended for adults and kids ages 8 and up. There is a suggested donation of $6, with proceeds benefiting Seacoast Family Promise, a Stratham-based nonprofit that assists homeless families with children. A Modern Lover at 3S

It was almost exactly two years ago that singer-songwriter and guitarist Jonathan Richman packed the house for a memorable concert at The Press Room. Richman returns to Portsmouth this weekend for his debut performance at 3S Artspace on Saturday, Nov. 19, at 9 p.m. Richman, founder of proto-punk legends the Modern Lovers, will be joined by drummer Tommy Larkins, a veteran of such bands as Naked Prey and Giant Sand. Xylouris White opens the show; the duo is touring in support of their second album, “Black Peak.” Tickets are $20, available here.
Mario Batali talks recipes

If you’re looking for some new recipes this Thanksgiving, The Music Hall has you covered. The Portsmouth theater hosts famed chef, author, and restaurateur Mario Batali for the next installment of Writers on a New England Stage on Sunday, Nov. 20, at 1 p.m. Batali, a James Beard Award winner who has authored 10 cookbooks and co-owns restaurants around the world, will read from his new book, “Big American Cookbook: 250 Favorite Recipes from Across the USA,” and then sit down for a Q&A with New Hampshire Public Radio’s Virginia Prescott. Transgender Day of Remembrance
Phillips Church will host Exeter’s Transgender Day of Remembrance on Sunday.
A slate of featured speakers and musical performances will highlight a gathering to honor people around the world who have lost their lives to anti-transgender violence. The local gathering for the 17th annual worldwide Transgender Day of Remembrance takes place at Phillips Exeter Church on Sunday, Nov. 20, at 7:30 p.m. Following an appearance by members of the Manchester-based TransPosition Vocal Ensemble, the gathering will conclude with a reading of the names of transgender people who have been murdered over the last year.
