A lift bridge whose center span raises to a height of 170 feet, the Memorial Bridge was dedicated in 1923 to the veterans of World War I. Footings for the bridge were reportedly sunk as much as 82 feet into bedrock.

The bridge is one of three that cross the Piscataqua River in Portsmouth, the other being the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge (aka Middle Bridge) and the Piscataqua River (aka High-Level or I-95 Bridge).

In summer, the bridge goes up every half hour, on the half hour, to accommodate river traffic. Pedestrians can walk between Portsmouth and Kittery, Maine.
