Cava is the dream of two long time friends, John Akar and Gregg Sessler. Together, they have combined their years of experience in the restaurant business in order to build this unique establishment.
Featuring two wine bars, one on street level and one in our Wine Cave, John offers a diverse and always changing selection of international wines to be paired with Chef Sessler’s modern and classic Mediterranean cuisine.
Chef Sessler has reunited with his friend and business partner, John Akar, after spending five years in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Northern California Wine Country. Gregg spent three years as the Executive Chef and Wine Buyer at The Caprice, where he reinvented the restaurant into one of the Bay Areas premier dining destinations. His critically acclaimed menus featured seasonal cuisine with both modern and classical influences.
Cava is located in the heart of historic downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and is just a brief walk from the Portsmouth Parking Garage and the Ladd Street access.
We are located in the middle of the quiet and quaint Commercial Alley, which is home to several small, independent businesses. Perhaps one of our most noted features is our Vertical Garden. In summertime, patrons may dine under the only outdoor living wall in the Northeast.
