The site of the South Ward Meetinghouse was occupied in 1731 by a parish meetinghouse, which move into South Church on State Street in 1826.
In 1864, the city, which had purchased and torn down the unused meetinghouse, agreed to erect a new building. Completed in 1866, the first floor was used for many years as a school, while the second-floor auditorium provided space for public functions. Black residents celebrated Emancipation Day here in January 1882.
Since the 1970s, the city has leased the building to the Children's Museum of Portsmouth.
