English visitors settled along the banks of the Piscataqua River in 1623, drawn by the commercial potential of the region's fish and timber, and the deep-water port.
The strawberry-strewn river banks gave rise to the community's original name, Strawbery Banke, which was changed to Portsmouth in 1653.
The city became a regional center for trade and served as the capital of colonial New Hampshire from 1679 until the middle of the Revolutionary War.
