Portsmouth Music and Arts Center (PMAC) is excited to announce the Winter Chamber Pops Concert of the Seacoast Youth Symphony Orchestra (SYSO).
The concert will be held at PMAC on Saturday, February 10 at 7pm in the Haas Family Gallery and Recital Hall and is free and open to the public. SYSO is a tiered program with two levels (juniors and youth) for students ages 5 to 18. The program provides opportunities for string players, woodwinds, brass and concert percussion.
The evening’s selections for chamber strings will cover a wide variety of popular musical numbers to be enjoyed by all. Junior SYSO, conducted by Lynne McMahon, will be performing “I’ve Got Rhythm” by George Gershwin and Chuck Berry’s version of the Beach Boys’ “Surfin’ USA.” Well known pieces such as, “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen, “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen and “Popular”, from the Steve Schwartz musical Wicked, will be performed by members of SYSO strings, conducted by Hannah Reitz. Rounding out the evening will be the combined levels performing “Best Day of My Life” by American Authors and the Beatles classic “All You Need is Love.”
About SYSO: Under the baton of Hannah Reitz, SYSO (Seacoast Youth Symphony Orchestra) is a fun and challenging experience for intermediate and advanced string players, with occasional appearances by musicians from PMAC’s Honor Winds. SYSO focuses on repertoire from the Classical and Romantic eras, with some 20th century and contemporary works balancing out programming. SYSO nurtures every aspect of each player’s development, utilizing sectionals and unique opportunities. This is the premiere musical experience for youth orchestral musicians in the Seacoast region. Tuition aid is available for students who would like to join the ensemble.
