Starting in May, visitors and downtown employees will be able to take advantage of a free shuttle between parking on Market Street and the downtown.
The shuttle will run Fridays (4pm-1:30am), Saturdays (noon-1:30am) and Sundays (noon-10pm), May 2 through Aug. 31, dropping passengers off at the bus stop adjacent to the High-Hanover parking garage. Wait times for the shuttle are not to exceed 10 minutes, and the vendor, TransAction Corporate Shuttles, Inc. of Woburn, Mass., must provide a means to notifying passengers when the next shuttle will arrive.
"This free shuttle service is a pilot program that was developed in order to provide a green solution to the need to reduce traffic and ease parking challenges in downtown Portsmouth," said Mark Nelson, the city's director of Parking & Transportation. "If it is successful, the shuttle service can potentially be expanded to more routes, stops, and hours, and considered for year-round service."
According to the city, TransAction Corporate Shuttles has a history of successful shuttle operations for regional clients, including New England Baptist Hospital and the Town of Acton, Mass.
