Council considering fireworks ordinance

There might soon be new rules governing backyard fireworks displays as the town council considers options for a fireworks ordinance. Town manager Perry Ellsworth says that in the last four months, residents have expressed concerns about fireworks “being set off too close to their homes.” The town currently does not have an ordinance that sets limits on the use of consumer-grade fireworks. Ellsworth says the council initially considered placing a moratorium on the use of consumer fireworks in town, but ultimately decided to develop an ordinance.

“Some local towns don’t allow fireworks within a certain amount of feet of another building or property,” Ellsworth says. “We listened to some folks speak at our last (town council) meeting, as we did a month before that. We’re still gathering information at this point.” Ellsworth expects the council to approve an ordinance by some time next spring.
