Pop-Up Galleries Spring Up in Downtown Portsmouth

This holiday season Seacoast artists are taking advantage of vacant storefronts in downtown Portsmouth with an innovation --short-term "pop-up" galleries.

At 33 Bow St. (a.k.a. Izzy's Ice cream), Port City Artisans offers a trove of of handcrafted wares. Check out beautiful nature-inspired jewelry by Carol Endicott Designs, custom-made bags by Elizabeth Berthound, colorful scarves by Weaving Willows, paintings by Rose Bryant, and belts, pottery and novelty items handmade of bronze. 10 a.m.-7 p.m, Sunday-Thursday; 10 a.m.-9 p.m., Friday and Saturday. (603) 988-6264

At 150 State St., the ice cream of Clark's Creamery has been displaced by George Beland's pop-up gallery, featuring his fine furniture, pottery by Erin Moran, jewelry by Mesala Jewelry, and items like calendars, watercolors, dyed-cloth tableware, beeswax candles, leather bags and wallets, and soap made from beer(!). Beland says the shop will remain open through the end of December and then offer a variety of wares until April, when ice cream season arrives and Clark's Creamery operates from the space once again. 11 a.m.-7 p.m., Wednesday-Saturday; and Sundays 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. except this weekend during the Button Factory Studios Open House. (603) 436-9800

Finally, at 86 Pleasant St., in the former space of the Green Monkey Restaurant, artists Ron Crusan, DeWitt Hardy, Ali Goodwin and Kate Doyle host an exhibit, studio party and sale 5-8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 5 with gallery hours noon-8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6.

Islington Street Guide

Islington Street in Portsmouth, aka the West End, has seen a explosion of business activity over the past couple years. Once the area was known for Hannaford's supermarket, The Button Factor and few businesses like Tony's Radio and TV. Nowadays it houses more than 100 retail stores, service businesses and small offices, from beer sellers to yoga studios. Recognizing the change, PortsmouthNH.com has added a guide to the neighborhood. See www.portsmouthnh.com/west_end/.
